“The African Doll” by Teresa Yego

Overview

THE AFRICAN DOLL poetically explores a range of emotions including love, hate, and confusion. People commonly experience different forms of abuse, whether physical or emotional. Victims often hesitate to speak out due to fear of being judged or labeled as liars. Experiencing heartbreak doesn’t necessarily mean we fell in love with the wrong person. Heartbreak may cause intense emotional turmoil and desperation, and will in some cases lead to substance abuse as a means of escape from reality. Our choice of partner may be seen as unacceptable by society at times, but love is beyond our control and inherently beautiful.
